about Le Marche

italia (15K)

The region lies on the eastern side of central Italy, between the Adriatic Sea and the high Apennine mountains and much of it remains unspoilt by the ravages of mass tourism. The name Marche derives from the germanic term marka used in medieval times to indicate 'border' areas presided by local noblemen. This corner of Italy was in the middle ages at the southern edge of the Carolingian kingdom and was a patchwork of castles and hamlets defending the boundary of the empire. Nowadays the Italian name of the region (Le Marche or 'The Marches') still reflects the plurality of this territory. A unique combination of countryside, sea, mountains, ancient towns, art and culture provides excitement for all the senses and caters for any kind of visitor. It is a "diffused museum" where every town reserves a masterpiece or an idyllic view and where every piece of ordinary countryside resembles the paintings of the Renaissance. Here the food as well is dignified to a cultural level, when every meal becomes a ritual of socialization and pleasure. Le Marche cuisine is not exception to the diversity that pervades every aspect of the region, being influenced by its nearest neighbors and taking the best from Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria and Abruzzo. It is really impossible to condense in few words all that Le Marche has to offer to visitors and for more information we invite you to visit the Le Marche's tourism official web site
